April's Topic & Speaker

Topic:  NASA Centennial “Green Flight Challenge”

Please join us in listening to a interesting presentation from Lee Delano on NASA Centennial “Green Flight Challenge”. His presentation will explain the rules/parameters of this challenge and the $1.65 million prize to be awarded to the best general aviation performance meeting the minimum threshold of 200 passenger miles per gallon while flying at least 100 miles per hour over a 200 mile course! Wow!

The history of past aviation prizes and designs will be reviewed along with the variety of aircraft used to capture those prizes.

A detailed look at all of the parameters required to win the prize and a look at the various types of aircraft designed and constructed for this competition. This includes the different type of energy prime movers proposed and the energy conversion of each type including diesel, bio-fuels, electric, and hybrids. Additionally, the different engineering technologies applied by the applicants to maximize the performance of their aircraft will be reviewed.

The final performance of the best designs will be revealed in comparison to other current vehicles in use.
